The Hot Water Beach Camp experience offers a unique opportunity to explore the remote and beautiful Te Rata Bay along the Tarawera Trail. Guests should park their vehicles at the Tarawera Trail Car Park if they plan to walk the trail before or after their stay. Camp gear and passengers must be dropped at the water taxi berth at Kariri Point Reserve as the van shuttle cannot carry both. The water taxi departs from Kariri Point Reserve and takes approximately 25 minutes to reach Hot Water Beach, providing a scenic and relaxing transfer. Campers should declare their gear when booking to ensure it travels safely with them. Cell phone coverage is limited along the trail and at the camp, so visitors should plan accordingly. During peak season, Hot Water Beach is shared with other visitors, adding a social and communal atmosphere to the experience.
Guests are required to bring all necessary camping gear, sufficient food and water for the length of their stay, and sunscreen. Additional costs apply for camp gear transfers, including fees for tramping packs, chill bins, tents, and unaccompanied items. The water taxi provides safe and all-weather travel to and from the camp, allowing guests to fully enjoy the natural beauty and geothermal features of the area without logistical concerns. This setup ensures a comfortable, adventurous, and memorable camping experience along the Tarawera Trail.
