Join us at Coyote Aventuras for a journey into the heart of the Mixteca, one of Oaxaca’s most culturally rich and storied regions. After a warm welcome at the office, we begin our scenic drive toward the community of Santiago Apoala, a sacred place whose name means where the water begins. Apoala has long been celebrated in ancestral narratives passed down through markets, gatherings, and eventually in painted codices made from amate paper. According to the ancient Vindobonensis manuscript, this valley is considered the birthplace of the first humans, emerging from a sacred turquoise pool that symbolizes the meeting point between the divine and the earthly. As we arrive in this enchanting community, the landscape reveals deep canyons, spring-fed waters, and a sense of timelessness that continues to shape indigenous identity. Our exploration begins with hikes to natural pools and waterfalls surrounded by lush vegetation, where every step carries echoes of ancient stories and spiritual beliefs tied to the land. Resting in communal cabins by the river, guests enjoy traditional meals crafted from ingredients nurtured by local hands, each dish reflecting centuries of sustainable agriculture and culinary wisdom.
The experience continues with visits to sacred sites, cliffside caves adorned with ancient paintings, and breathtaking natural formations that highlight the region’s biodiversity. Guided by local experts deeply connected to their territory, we learn about cultural practices, seasonal foods, and the significance of the natural world in Mixtec worldview. Evenings invite relaxation with shared meals, moments of quiet reflection, or gathering around a small fire beneath a canopy of stars. As the journey unfolds, the valley offers opportunities to swim, hike, listen to stories, and immerse oneself fully in this living cultural landscape. The adventure concludes with a final communal meal in the village, allowing time to appreciate the kindness of local hosts and the profound beauty of a place shaped by history, spirituality, and nature. This experience is designed for travelers who seek connection, authenticity, and the chance to walk within a world where myth and landscape exist in perfect harmony.

Water is cold but the waterfall is beautiful only problem is the wall downhill to get to the waterfall and the walk up the stairs… it is a full workout.

This place is such a gem if you are ready to make the odyssey there. It's a good long drive from Oaxaca City, much of which is highway but when you're around 40km away, you have to spend 10km on a very rough road to get back to an actual paved road again. Be sure to have a good vehicle and a set of balls to make this drive. Once you get to the valley where the waterfalls are, you will be directed to "register" at the tourist office. They don't speak a word of English, and they only let you jump on wifi if you pay 25MXP. It's Mexico, they will nickel and dime you to death. They sent us along the wrong direction to the waterfalls ("cascada") but fortunately we had downloaded our region on Google Maps and we were able to find our way to the waterfall parking area. They have guides, but none of them speak English, so what's the point if you don't speak Spanish? Once you get to the parking lot, you will have no idea there are waterfalls nearby. It just looks like a farm. You cross the bridge and find the path to the left, then descend down into the valley until you see signs for the waterfalls and the lagoon. This is the amazing part. The waterfalls are stunning, and the lagoon is very cool. We took a lot of photos and for fifteen minutes, we had the entire place to ourselves. It's beautiful! We ate our lunch and relaxed in the shade, smoked a cigar and swam in the waters. It was a lovely experience to make this journey once we arrived.

Well worth the hike! The pools further down have far fewer people.

The destination is absolutely stunning. Getting there is torture.... at least for me. Lol! Proceed with caution. Take water, hiking or tennis shoes and pace yourself. If you see my lungs down there, please return to me.

Incredible place to visit if you want to get a bit off the beaten path and visit the Mixtec people. To visit these places the locals require you to hire a guide or a cabana to contribute to the pueblo
