Echidna Encounter Offers a Rare Behind-the-Scenes Wildlife Experience at Maru

Visitors to Maru Wildlife Park can enjoy a unique opportunity to meet one of Australia’s most distinctive native animals during an intimate echidna encounter. Guided by an experienced wildlife keeper, guests gain fascinating insights into the echidna’s remarkable adaptations, including its specialised feeding habits, extraordinary tongue, and the behaviours that make this iconic species so unique.

As part of the experience, participants assist with the echidna’s daily feeding routine while observing how positive reinforcement training encourages natural, voluntary behaviours. Keepers share engaging stories about each animal’s personality, intelligence, and individual characteristics, creating a memorable and educational wildlife encounter.

The experience is designed with animal welfare at its core, allowing the echidna to participate at its own pace while ensuring a calm and respectful environment for both visitors and wildlife. Guests are welcome to capture photographs throughout the session, preserving unforgettable moments with one of Australia's most unusual mammals.

Held within the echidna habitat, the encounter can be adapted for guests with mobility requirements when arrangements are made in advance. General park admission is required in addition to the encounter booking, while weather conditions and the animal’s comfort may influence each session, ensuring the highest standards of safety, conservation, and animal care.
