Experience the best winter kayak tour in Tennessee, running from November through the last weekend in February, and witness the incredible sandhill cranes in their warmer winter habitat. These birds escape the harsh cold of Alaska and Northern Canada, finding refuge in the shallow, warm waters of the Tennessee River around Hiwassee Island. Using provided binoculars, you can enjoy the sights and sounds of thousands of cranes flying above and landing on the water, flapping their wings, dancing, and calling to each other across the island.
No kayaking experience is needed, making this trip beginner-friendly and accessible to everyone. Participants are kept warm with neoprene paddle mittens, waterproof jackets, and drip skirts, and at the end of the tour, hot chocolate or apple cider is provided to help you relax and warm up. The tour is a fun way to meet new people or encourage friends to try something new, with peak season for sandhill cranes between the third week of December and the second week of February, while November and December are ideal for spotting American White Pelicans.
