We just completed the Secrets of Downtown Athens tour with Katia, and it was absolutely incredible from start to finish, tying with the Istanbul Two Continents tour as my favorite Culinary Backstreets experience. As a local from the neighborhood, Katia wove her own childhood memories into every stop, sharing hidden gems that have been part of her personal story for generations. This made the experience feel deeply authentic and intimate, far beyond any typical tourist tour. We explored traditional Greek foods at family-run restaurants that have stood the test of time, enjoying hearty meze, fresh seafood bites, and soul-warming sweets that transported us back decades. We tasted plenty (come hungry!), and I was a fan of most dishes, especially the beef souvlaki its simplicity was deceptive, with incredibly fresh and perfectly balanced flavors that burst with every bite. I left with a deeper appreciation for Athens' culinary soul. Katia's passion shines through in every story and recommendation; you can tell it comes straight from the heart. Even though she only started guiding this tour this year, her genuine connection to the area made her a natural. If you're in Athens, this tour is a must for foodies craving real, lived-in vibes over scripted perfection. Thank you, Katia, for an unforgettable afternoon! Highly recommend. 🌟🍴

Athens was our third Culinary Backstreets tour having taken tours in Tbilisi and Porto and all have been excellent. In Athens, Constantine was very friendly and informed us about the history of the Greek dishes we tried, Greece traditions and of course its history and mythology. We also found we shared common interests in music and film! We went on the Keramikos tour, so we were off the beaten tourist track and Constantine introduced us to some lovely local residential areas, market and hangouts. All the food was delicious and we had very happy, if very full, stomachs by the end of the day! Highly recommend.

Exarchia: Taste of Utopia with Constantine We had the great privilege of doing the ‘Exarchia: Taste of Utopia’ tour today with Constantine. What a brilliant introduction to Athens, an historic city in transition. Of course the food and wine were delicious but the real bonus was the opportunity to hear first-hand what life is like for an Athenian, and to be able to ask questions and to learn how to be a good tourist at a time when attitudes to tourists are not always positive. As we embark on a two week tour of mainland Greece and the Peloponnese, we have a better understanding of Greek culture, especially as it relates to eating and drinking. Thank you Constantine. This is our third Culinary Backstreets adventure - we’ll be back for more.

This tour was fantastic and Constantine, our guide, was exceptional! He paid close attention to my mom's dining restrictions but didn't make it seem like it was a big deal. He made 4 hours of walking in the heat of athens seem like a breeze! He really knows the neighborhood and the foods! Highly recommend!!

We loved this tour! We were two teenagers and two parents and everyone was delighted with the tour, the sights, the foods, and, most importantly, our tour guide, Carolina Doriti (@Carolina_Doriti on IG). She’s a professional chef and cookbook author who has deep knowledge and love of her native city. It was hot that day in Athens and as Greece emerges from the pandemic, lots of people out and about. But we felt comfortable and safe throughout as Carolina, the stores and restaurants took extreme precautions. We stopped at 7 different places to eat and drink and you can see some of what we saw and ate in the 50 pix attached. On the 5+ hour tour, we walked about 9,000 steps, including a climb upto little-visited places behind the Acropolis. So make sure everyone is comfortable walking that much. She also took into consideration food preferences and allergies and made pit stops as requested by the participants. The pricing isn’t cheap, but we thought it was fair and reflected a good value. We would absolutely recommend this to others to any foodies with the time and energy to do this in Athens and will be looking for this in other countries.
