Arctic Ice Climbing Adventure Showcases Finland’s Korouoma Gorge

A winter adventure experience in Finnish Lapland is offering guided ice climbing in the dramatic landscape of Korouoma Canyon, a deep fracture valley formed over millions of years. Dropping more than 100 meters below the surrounding terrain, the gorge transforms each winter into a frozen climbing arena featuring towering natural ice formations.

Between 10 and 20 ice falls typically form during the season, with some reaching heights of 60 to 70 meters. Among the most well-known routes are Ruskea Virta (“Brown Stream”), Mammutti (“Mammoth”), and Jaska Jokunen (“Charlie Brown”), each offering distinct shapes and climbing challenges that have helped establish Korouoma as one of Finland’s premier ice climbing destinations.

The guided experience begins in the Pyhä-Luosto region, where instructors from Bliss provide participants with all necessary technical equipment before leading a trek through snow-covered taiga forest trails. The journey through the winter landscape builds anticipation before arriving at the base of the frozen cliffs.

At the ice walls, guides secure rope systems and prepare climbing stations while guests rest, take photos, and enjoy light refreshments. Participants then attempt climbs on natural ice formations ranging from 20 to 60 meters in height, with opportunities for multiple ascents depending on conditions and individual stamina. The return route often includes a stop by a bonfire for refreshments, concluding a physically demanding but memorable Arctic climbing experience.
