Ice Climbing Day in Korouoma Canyon – from Pyhä-Luosto

Korouoma is a millions-of-years-old fracture valley in the bedrock, forming a magnificent gorge that drops over 100 meters below the surrounding terrain. Every winter, 10–20 ice falls are formed, with the tallest reaching 60–70 meters. The most famous is Ruskea Virta (“Brown Stream”), along with other classics like Mammutti (“Mammoth”) and Jaska Jokunen (“Charlie Brown”). Discovered as an ice climbing destination in the 1980s, Korouoma is now widely regarded as the best ice climbing spot in Finland. Bliss guides meet clients in Pyhä-Luosto with all relevant gear prepared and packed, leading them through beautiful taiga forest trails to the foot of the ice falls.

At the ice fall, guides set up rope lines for safe climbing while clients enjoy an energizing snack and take photos or videos of the stunning surroundings. Once ready, clients experience true Arctic ice climbing on nature-made ice walls, with heights ranging from 20 to 60 meters. Depending on stamina and conditions, every client gets the chance to complete multiple climbs. On the return journey, there is often the opportunity to stop by a bonfire for another snack before heading back to Pyhä-Luosto, completing an unforgettable Arctic ice climbing adventure.
