Electric Fatbike Tour Lets Visitors Hunt for Amethysts in Finnish Lapland

A seasonal outdoor experience in Finnish Lapland is drawing visitors to the slopes of Lampivaara for a unique blend of cycling, geology, and gemstone hunting. Running during summer and autumn, the “Amethyst Mine Tour by Electric Fatbike” operates every Wednesday from June to October, with additional departures available on special request.

The journey begins on an electrically assisted fatbike, allowing guests to comfortably ascend the forested trails toward Pyhä-Luosto National Park. Led by a local guide, the ride climbs toward the summit of Lampivaara fell, where sweeping views open over the surrounding wilderness of forests, ridges, and fells. The ascent itself is designed as part of the adventure, combining light physical activity with accessible exploration of the Arctic landscape.

At the top, visitors gather in a wooden shelter for a storytelling session focused on the region’s geological history. Guides share insights into the formation of amethyst deposits, the heritage of mining in the area, and the cultural and believed properties of the distinctive purple stone. The presentation connects the natural landscape with centuries of local tradition and scientific interest.

The experience concludes at the digging site, where each guest is invited to search for and excavate their own amethyst gemstone. After the hands-on mining activity, participants have time to visit the on-site Amethyst Shop, where locally sourced stones are crafted into jewellery and keepsakes. The tour blends outdoor adventure, education, and interactive discovery, offering visitors a rare opportunity to take home a personally unearthed piece of Lapland’s geology.
