The Major War Criminals Trial, held from November 20, 1945, to October 1, 1946, before the International Military Tribunal in Nuremberg, marked a significant moment in world history. It was here, in Courtroom 600 of the Nuremberg Palace of Justice, that the most prominent leaders of Nazi Germany were tried for war crimes and crimes against humanity. As a result, Courtroom 600 gained worldwide notoriety, forever associated with the pursuit of justice in the aftermath of World War II. From 1946 to 1949, the courtroom continued to serve as the site for 12 Subsequent Trials, conducted exclusively by U.S. military tribunals, focusing on lower ranking Nazi officials and members of various Nazi organizations.
In addition to its historical trials, Nuremberg is home to the remains of the former Nazi Party Rally Grounds, located in the city's southeast corner. These expansive grounds, covering 4 square miles, were designed to serve as a grand backdrop for Nazi rallies, intended to impress upon both the German people and the wider world the power and authority of the National Socialist regime. Today, the imposing structures still stand, a stark and haunting reminder of the megalomania and totalitarian ambition that defined the Nazi era. Their immense proportions continue to captivate visitors, offering a poignant testament to a dark chapter in history. These remnants of the past serve as powerful symbols of both the scale of the regime's vision and the lasting impact of its destructive actions.
