Plantation to Emancipation Tour Brings Houston’s History to Life Through Performance and Heritage Sites


A powerful historical tour titled From Plantation to Emancipation – The Freedom Experience offers visitors a deeply moving journey through Houston’s evolution from plantation era to emancipation. The experience combines guided storytelling with live dramatic reenactments and song, bringing history vividly to life.


During the tour, actress Kijana Wiseman performs emotionally rich interpretations that highlight the hardships of slavery and the triumph of freedom. Drawing inspiration from a Library of Congress slave narrative and a script written by Martha Whiting-Goddard, great-granddaughter of Reverend Jack Yates, the performance adds personal and historical depth to the experience.


Participants visit three significant historic sites: the 1847 Kellum-Noble House, the 1866 Fourth Ward Cottage, and the 1870 Yates House. Each location is recognized as part of UNESCO’s “Slave Route Project” Sites of Memory, reflecting their important role in documenting the history of slavery and emancipation.


The 90-minute tour begins on Saturday, February 10, in celebration of Black History Month, and continues on the second and fourth Saturdays each month from 12:30 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. Group bookings of 10 or more are encouraged to reserve at least two weeks in advance by calling 713-655-1912 (ask for Nicole) or emailing grouptours@heritagesociety.org. Offered year-round as part of the Visit Houston Signature Experience for the Soul series, the tour provides an educational and emotionally resonant exploration of Houston’s past.
