Absolutely stunning! Castle Hill is a magical landscape of massive limestone boulders scattered across rolling hills — it feels like walking through a natural sculpture park. The views are incredible in every direction, and it’s a photographer’s dream. Easy to reach from the main road and perfect for exploring, climbing, or just soaking in the beauty of this unique spot. A must-see in New Zealand!

Definitely worth the stop. So awesome seeing all the rock formations and walking along the track. Was very beautiful in the light rain too, made it more special.

A must see if you are travelling between Christchurch and the West Coast. 1 hour 20 mins from Christchurch sits the incredible rock formations of Castle Hill. Filming location for Lord of the Rings and Narnia. Surreal, magnificent, spiritual, breathtaking.

If you're visiting Christchurch and have some free time, I highly recommend making a trip to Castle Hill. Known as a filming location for The Chronicles of Narnia and The Lord of the Rings, the area offers truly breathtaking scenery that left me in awe of nature’s grandeur. The drive from Christchurch to Castle Hill is just as memorable — with rolling green hills dotted with sheep, cows, and horses, it feels like something out of a storybook. This was one of the highlights of my trip, and I’d strongly recommend it to anyone looking to experience the raw, majestic beauty of New Zealand.

Kura Tāwhiti – Sacred stones and cinematic magic Walking among the giant limestone boulders of Kura Tāwhiti / Castle Hill feels like stepping into another world – and rightly so. This is a sacred place, rich in meaning for the Māori people, and it radiates a quiet strength that’s hard to put into words. There’s a deep sense of stillness here, a timelessness shaped by wind, water, and spirit. It’s easy to see why Peter Jackson chose this landscape to bring The Lord of the Rings to life – the natural drama is already there. But beyond the cinematic fame, this place speaks on its own terms. We wandered respectfully, in awe of both the scenery and the cultural weight it carries. A place to slow down, breathe, and listen.
