The tour begins with a visit to the ancient ruins of Pompeii, a city that was suddenly buried under a thick blanket of volcanic ash following the catastrophic eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 AD. For centuries, Pompeii remained lost to the world, hidden beneath layers of ash and forgotten by time, until its remarkable rediscovery brought to light an incredibly well-preserved snapshot of Roman life. Walking through the ruins, visitors can explore the original urban layout, including homes, shops, baths, frescoes, and mosaics, providing a vivid glimpse into the daily life of the ancient Romans. The journey continues with a stop at a local workshop dedicated to the traditional craft of cameos and coral carving, an art form for which the Neapolitan school is renowned. Cameos, intricately sculpted shells often depicting mythological scenes, represent a centuries-old cultural heritage that continues to thrive in this region. After some free time for lunch, the tour proceeds to Mount Vesuvius itself, a still-active volcano situated within the Mount Vesuvius National Park, which is recognized by UNESCO as a Biosphere Reserve. The park features a unique geological formation known as a "mountain within a mountain," where the original volcanic cone was partially destroyed and replaced by a newer one. Visitors can take a short hike to the crater’s edge, offering breathtaking views and an opportunity to witness a landscape shaped by centuries of volcanic activity and natural re-colonization by vegetation. The fertile slopes surrounding Vesuvius are known for their diverse agricultural products, including fruits, vines, and flowers. While Vesuvius is infamous for its deadly eruption in 79 AD, it has also erupted multiple times since, with the most recent eruption occurring in 1944 during World War II. Today, it is considered inactive but remains a powerful symbol of the region’s dynamic natural history and cultural legacy.

Superb place - must visit and one of the best in the world. You see, when one usually goes into a museum, you look from afar and this history and all. It feels educational and impersonal - it doesn’t feel quite real. So it is ironic that in such a surreal place, everything feels so genuine. You can walk into the buildings, you can see paintings and colours and history right in front of your eyes. It’s absolutely fascinating. It is also HUGE. We stayed there 6 hours and didn’t manage to finish everything. The amenities there are plentiful and there are various taps for drinking water throughout the park. That was really convenient and in hot weather, very useful. There is also a main cafe area with reasonably priced food and drink - and a very large selection from multiple shops. That is found in the centre of the park. Also, do NOT buy the tour. The park provides you with an app and maps that are FREE and give you an incredibly in depth view of the park. So get this option as it is easier and in various languages. One word of warning, the amphitheatre was closed when we went, a shame because of the fact that I am a Pink Floyd fan. Also, book in advance - it makes life much easier getting in.

We travelled to pompeii with a guide. Firstly the site is huge and it’s just the tip of what is to be excavated. We decided to travel with a guide because we gained skip the line access which was worth it given the size of the lines outside. I would suggest buying tickets ahead of time given tickets are limited per day. We traveled in September and it was still warm. My guidance would be to take some refreshments and potentially an umbrella for shade. The site is uneven and not equipped for those with mobility issues. A good pair of trainers for everyone is a must. There are toilets in the site so don’t feel like you have to wait to use the toilets outside ahead of your visit. There is plenty of parking outside which can be booked in advance. Staff are a little firm at times but given the amount of people they deal with it is expected. It can get very busy so earlier morning or late afternoon appear to be the best times.

What an amazing experience to see this gigantic city being unearthed bit by bit. Our guide was knowledgeable and friendly. This city was very much like cities today restaurants, butcher shops, bakeries, spas and the remains of the residences were remarkable colourful and spacious. We also got to view part of the excavation that is going on now by walking on the scaffolding over top ...amazing

Pompeii is an extraordinary site and a must-see if you are in the area. The park is very large, with countless ruins to explore, and you can easily spend the whole day here. Because of the stone and open spaces, it gets very hot, so bring plenty of water, sunscreen, and try to arrive at opening time to avoid the big crowds (even on weekdays it fills up fast). Only small dogs are allowed inside. For just a few euros more, the extension with the two villas is definitely worth it, as they are beautifully preserved and give even more insight into daily life in ancient times.

An Unforgettable Journey Back in Time. Visiting Pompeii is one of those experiences that stays with you forever. Nothing can truly prepare you for the scale and emotion of this place. It's an absolute must-see if you are anywhere in the region. Our single most important tip is to hire an archaeologist for a guided tour. We had a guide for the first couple of hours, and it was the best decision we made. They bring the ruins to life with incredible stories of how people truly lived—and how they died. After the tour, we spent more time exploring on our own, and the context our guide provided made everything so much more meaningful. It's fascinating to learn the details of daily life: what they ate, how they visited the local brothel, or how their bakeries operated. The city's sophistication is mind-blowing; seeing pedestrian crosswalks from over 2000 years ago is incredible, especially when many countries don't even have them today! The scale is also immense, from the huge villas of the wealthy covering hundreds of square meters, to the massive amphitheater that could hold the entire town's population of 20,000. This isn't just a collection of ruins; it's a powerful and moving story frozen in time. A true memory of a lifetime that you simply have to experience for yourself. Nothing compares to it.
