Following catastrophic floods in 1957, the Turia River was diverted south of Valencia, leaving behind a dry riverbed that became a 10-kilometer green park running through the city. This newly reclaimed urban space became the site for the visionary City of Arts and Sciences, designed by Santiago Calatrava. Positioned on flat land along the last stretch of the former river, the complex grew into a monumental cultural and scientific hub. Between 1998 and 2003, a series of futuristic buildings rose, including the Science Museum, the Planetarium, the Opera House, the Umbracle promenade, and an underground parking structure. All structures are unified by Calatrava’s signature use of white concrete, flowing organic shapes and shimmering mosaic tiles, surrounded by vast shallow pools that reflect the architecture like a mirror.
