If you want to enjoy the canyon from below and walk inside it, go from the other side. Don’t go to this main access. Park your car at the parking lot one further from the bridge parking lot. From there it is a 30 min walk. 8 november 2025

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Stuðlagil Canyon is one of the most impressive places we saw in Iceland — the basalt columns rising straight from the turquoise water look unreal. The canyon can be visited from two sides. From the Main Access side you can easily reach the viewing platforms. It’s a quick and simple stop with parking close by — great if you’re short on time or just want to see it from above. But if you have the time, we really recommend going to the opposite side of the river. There’s a parking area there and then about a 30-minute walk each way on a flat path. The reward is much better views and the chance to climb down into the canyon itself — standing among the basalt columns by the water is an amazing feeling. We did both sides and were glad we made the effort to hike in. The second side felt calmer, less crowded and gave a real sense of the canyon’s size and beauty. Definitely worth the extra walk if you can.

Stunning basalt columns. The main entrance side has nicely maintained trails, viewing platforms and benches. Its worth visiting both sides, though the other is a 15 minute drive to park at the falls then a 30 min walk - but you get a different view.
