Brown Bear Viewing Adventure Takes Guests Into Alaska’s Wild Admiralty Island

Wildlife enthusiasts can venture deep into Southeast Alaska on a seven hour brown bear viewing adventure at Pack Creek Bear Sanctuary on Admiralty Island. The experience begins in Juneau with a safety briefing before guests board a scenic floatplane for the journey to Pack Creek, widely known as the “Fortress of the Bears” because of its remarkable concentration of brown bears.

After landing, experienced guides and Pack Creek rangers lead visitors along shoreline and forest trails toward prime wildlife viewing areas. Guests may observe brown bears foraging along the beach, fishing for salmon in the creek or resting in the surrounding vegetation. Although sightings cannot be guaranteed, the sanctuary’s abundant bear population provides excellent opportunities for observing these magnificent animals in their natural environment.

The adventure also highlights the diverse ecosystem of Admiralty Island, where eagles and other wildlife thrive alongside the island’s famous brown bears. Guides share information about bear behavior, the surrounding wilderness and the importance of respecting this protected environment, while guests have opportunities to photograph wildlife from appropriate viewing areas.

Roundtrip van and floatplane transportation, professional guiding, Forest Service permits, rain gear, rubber boots, lunch, snacks and a souvenir water bottle are included. Participants must be physically capable of walking approximately two miles over slippery, uneven terrain and must meet the stated weight limit. Bear sightings remain subject to natural conditions, making every visit a unique Alaskan wilderness experience.
