Hermanus Whale Watching Cruise Offers Close Encounters with Southern Right Whales

A premium marine wildlife experience departing from Hermanus New Harbour is attracting visitors seeking close encounters with some of the ocean’s most majestic creatures. Recognized as one of the world’s leading whale-watching destinations, the coastal town provides ideal conditions for observing southern right whales during their seasonal migration.

The experience begins with a detailed shore-based briefing led by a whale specialist, offering guests insight into local marine ecosystems and expected wildlife sightings. Visitors are then welcomed aboard a purpose-built catamaran designed for stability and clear viewing, ensuring a comfortable journey into deeper waters where whale activity is most frequently observed.

Once at sea, expert guides provide live commentary, explaining whale behaviors and highlighting encounters with other marine species such as dolphins, seals, and seabirds. The vessel’s professional crew creates an informative and engaging environment, allowing passengers to better understand the natural rhythms of the marine environment while observing wildlife in real time.

A dedicated onboard videographer documents key moments throughout the voyage, giving guests a lasting record of their experience. With its combination of education, comfort, and close-range wildlife viewing, the tour offers an immersive introduction to the marine biodiversity that defines the waters off the Western Cape.

We had an absolute amazing experience with Southern right charters. The staff were friendly and enthusiastic. They also provided amazing insight into the whales that we saw. We were lucky enough to see about six southern right whales very close as well as the rare brindle too! We would definitely recommend their charters to anyone looking to have this amazing experience

Whole team were amazing, there was tea, coffee and biscuits available upon arrival for the early morning run. We had a safety briefing before boarding the boat and headed off into Hermanus Bay. We were fortunate to spot whales within 15 mins and viewed 8 x Southern Right Whales in various locations in the bay. The experience meant we saw these magnificient mammals up close for well over an hour before heading back. The crew made the trip exciting, interesting and informative. Thoroughly recommend you take the time to do this particularly if your struggling to see the whales from the shoreline.
