A very slick process of moving the waiting passengers around the terminal, through security check (need ID) & then onto the vessel. Apparently critical to book your ticket & be early. The Krotoa vessel is very comfy & steady in the water. Staff were friendly & competent on land & water. When returning, you exit past the professional photos & waiting seals & into the V&A.

Positives: - Amazing to hear the real story about the prison experience from an ex-prisoner. - Interesting to see the historical buildings. - Nice views back towards Cape Town. - Penguins! Negatives: - Very long waiting times and delays (First ferry left 40 minutes late. The whole tour is meant to take 3 hours but ended up taking 6 hours). - Not a lot of information given overall. Mostly about day to day prison life, very little about Mandela. Both the coach tour and prison tour felt rushed - the majority of our time was spent waiting for the rest of the group. - Huge group sizes (a full busload for a walking tour of the prison) which made it hard to hear/interact with the tour guide. Overall, would not recommend if you only have a short time in Cape Town or if you’re just not that interested. It’s not worth the rigmarole and does not do justice to the legacy of Nelson Mandela and the other prisoners here. It’s a shame as the guides are great - maybe with a few organisational improvements (e.g. smaller groups, more thorough and informative tours, prison artefacts) this could be a much more worthwhile and enjoyable experience.

Very emotional experience. The tour of the actual prison is given by former prisoners. This was truly a learning experience. Buy tickets a couple of days before you plan to go. They sell out quickly. Buy from the Ticket Counter, not online.
