Step into the history of Rangiriri and discover one of New Zealand’s most significant Māori earthwork fortifications and battle sites. This two hour cultural experience takes you through historic locations connected to the 1860s Waikato invasion and the Rangiriri battle, remembered as one of the bloodiest battles during the Crown invasion of Waikato. Through the landscape and stories, you will gain a deeper understanding of the events that shaped the region and its people.

The experience includes a visit to Te Maataarae ki Rangiriri, an old pā site and military redoubt, where you can explore places connected to the historic conflict. You will also see remnants of the original Rangiriri Pā earthworks and learn about the strategic importance of the site. The tour brings the 19th century to life while highlighting the determination and resilience of Waikato and their allied tribes.

A key part of the experience is visiting the world’s first Māori replica earthwork trenches built to the original scale. Walking through these reconstructed trenches offers a closer understanding of the fortifications and the conditions experienced during the conflict. Local narratives share the stories of the men, women, and children connected to these events, including accounts preserved through generations of descendants.

The tour also explores the meaning behind the carved pou and tomokanga created by Kīngitanga Master Carvers. These carvings help connect visitors with the cultural heritage and stories of the area. As an outdoor experience, guests should dress appropriately for the weather, stay hydrated, wear comfortable enclosed shoes, and use sun protection. Flash photography and video recording restrictions apply, wheelchair accessibility in the trenches is limited, and tours have a maximum guest capacity for visitor safety and enjoyment.
