Silver Splash Rescues and Recoveries
Silver Splash Rescues and Recoveries is a kayaking safety program designed for older adults in partnership with the Whatcom Council on Aging. The session helps participants become more confident and self reliant while enjoying time on Bellingham Bay.
Participants practice essential rescue skills both on and in the water. The class begins with wet exit practice in shallow water before moving into paddle float self rescue, cowboy self rescue and assisted T Rescue techniques. Bracing and edging skills are also practiced.
The program focuses on understanding personal and boat limits while developing practical skills for handling capsizes and assisting other paddlers. All necessary equipment and gear are available during the session, and participants may bring their own wetsuit if preferred.
Participants need Essentials of Sea Kayaking or equivalent experience before joining. Those wishing to use their own kayak should contact the activity team beforehand. The program is designed to be accessible to seniors, with equipment and opportunities suited to older adults.
