Kent Introduction to Sheep Keeping
A six hour introductory sheep keeping course offers beginners a practical first step into the world of sheep care. Designed for participants aged 13 and above, the one day session combines discussion, demonstrations, and hands on farm activities. Guests learn essential information about sheep management while gaining practical experience on a working farm.
The day begins at 9am with a welcome and refreshments before moving into health and safety, legislation, animal movements, and record keeping. Participants then meet the flock, help prepare the pens, and learn how to safely round up and move sheep. The practical format allows beginners to experience everyday sheep keeping tasks.
Further sessions focus on sheep handling, routine health checks, and basic animal care. Participants are introduced to preventative treatments, foot care, parasite control, vaccination, and safe handling techniques. After lunch, the group continues with practical handling activities before learning about sheep feeding and nutrition.
The course finishes with a question and answer session where participants can discuss sheep keeping directly with the farm owners. Drinks, information sheets, and practical learning are part of the experience. Guests should bring their own lunch, wellies, and waterproof outerwear. The course is not suitable for wheelchair users or those with limited mobility.
