Your 2-day adventure from Marrakech to Merzouga begins with an early morning pickup by your driver from Sahara Camel Trips. You’ll head into the High Atlas Mountains, winding through the scenic Tizi N’Tichka pass, with stops for panoramic views and photo opportunities of traditional Berber villages. The journey continues to the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Ait Ben Haddou, a magnificent fortified village known for its cinematic history, having featured in films like Gladiator, Game of Thrones, and The Mummy. From there, you’ll travel to Ouarzazate, known as “the gateway to the desert,” and visit the Taourirt Kasbah—one of Morocco’s most beautiful and historic ksars. Continuing through the lush Skoura palm grove and the fragrant Rose Valley, you'll pass by the dramatic landscapes of the Dades and Todra Valleys. After lunch, the route takes you through small towns like Tinejdad and Touroug, before reaching the golden dunes of Erg Chebbi in Merzouga. Here, your camel awaits to carry you across the sands for a sunset trek through the desert. You’ll enjoy sandboarding, take in breathtaking views, and eventually arrive at your Berber camp for the evening. Expect warm hospitality, traditional mint tea, a delicious Moroccan dinner, Berber drumming around the campfire, and a peaceful night under the stars in your nomadic tent.
On the second day, you’ll have the option to wake early and watch the sunrise over the dunes before enjoying breakfast at camp. After returning by camel to meet your driver, the journey continues through the Ziz Valley, a picturesque oasis lined with date palms and fortified ksours. A stop in Midelt offers time to relax and enjoy lunch in this tranquil town nestled in the Atlas Mountains. The scenery changes dramatically as you continue through the Middle Atlas—trading desert heat for snow-capped peaks, cedar forests, and lush landscapes. Along the way, you’ll pass through Erfoud, famous for its fossil-rich terrain, and may spot Barbary macaques in the cedar forests near Azrou. The final stretch takes you through the alpine town of Ifrane, often called the "Switzerland of Morocco," before arriving in the historic city of Fes by early evening, where your driver will drop you off at your hotel or riad, concluding your memorable desert journey.
