Mdina, perched on a plateau in the center of Malta, is the first stop on this tour. Once the capital of the island, Mdina has been known by many names including Melita, Medina, Citta Nobile, and Citta Vecchia. Today it is called the Silent City because of its peaceful atmosphere at any time of day or night. Walking through its narrow streets, quaint alleys, and historic buildings allows visitors to truly experience the city. From the high bastion walls, you can enjoy far reaching panoramic views across the island. The charm of Mdina lies in its quiet streets, historic architecture, and the sense of stepping back into centuries of history.
Next, the tour continues to Mosta, where the famous church stands in the center of town. Inspired by Rome’s Pantheon, this 18th century building is known for its massive dome, the third largest unsupported dome in the world. During World War II, a bomb pierced the roof but did not explode, saving hundreds of lives. The final stop is Ta’Qali, a village dedicated to Maltese handicrafts. Here you can watch artisans create intricate glass pieces, silver filigree jewelry, carved limestone items, and other local crafts. This is an ideal place to find unique souvenirs and appreciate traditional Maltese art.
