Embark on a meaningful 2-hour guided walking tour to the Imagine Peace Tower, a powerful light installation created by artist Yoko Ono in memory of her late husband, John Lennon. This striking beacon of hope and unity stands on Viðey Island, just off the coast of Reykjavík, and serves as a symbol of the couple’s lasting campaign for global peace. As you explore the island, you'll not only learn about the vision and symbolism behind the tower, but also discover the island’s rich trading history, artistic heritage, and unique natural surroundings. The tour offers sweeping views of the Reykjavík skyline and surrounding seascape—perfect for quiet reflection or capturing beautiful photos. And if you're lucky, the northern lights may add an extra touch of magic to your experience.
The Imagine Peace Tower is more than just a monument; it’s a symbol of humanity’s shared dream for peace. Shaped like a serene wishing well and inscribed with the words “IMAGINE PEACE” in 24 languages, the tower comes to life after dark, sending radiant beams skyward through a mirrored lighting system. Its glow, shaped by Iceland’s ever-changing weather, offers a unique experience every time. Importantly, the tower’s illumination is powered entirely by sustainable geothermal energy from Reykjavik Energy, reflecting the values it represents. A collaboration between Yoko Ono, the City of Reykjavík, Reykjavik Art Museum, and Reykjavik Energy brought the tower to life. It is lit each year from 9 October to 8 December to mark Lennon’s birth and death, and again during key dates like the Winter Solstice, New Year, Yoko Ono’s birthday, and the Spring Equinox—each lighting an opportunity to reflect on peace and unity in a beautifully atmospheric setting.
