Arctic Dog Sled Safari Showcases Finland’s Winter Wilderness

An Arctic dog sled safari is offering visitors an immersive journey through some of northern Finland’s most striking winter landscapes. The route winds through forest paths, gentle slopes, marshlands, clearings and frozen rivers, creating a varied trail that highlights the quiet beauty of the Arctic environment.

A key highlight of the experience is the crossing of Lake Ounasjarvi, where thick ice forms a vast frozen highway for the sled teams. As the dogs glide across the open surface, participants are treated to sweeping views of the winter wilderness, accompanied by the rhythmic sound of sled runners moving over snow.

Midway through the journey, guests are welcomed to a traditional lakeside cabin for a warm break. Depending on conditions, visitors are served hot drinks along with Finnish delicacies such as squeaky cheese with cloudberry jam or forest inspired cakes, while the fire inside offers comfort on colder days and the lakeside setting provides calm on milder ones.

Guides also use the stop to share insights into sled dog care, giving visitors a closer understanding of life on an Arctic farm. After returning from the safari, guests may assist in bringing the dogs back to their kennels before relaxing at the farm kota, where stories of the journey are shared in a warm and traditional setting.
