Join the Cass Scenic Railroad and the Durbin & Greenbrier Valley Railroad for the extraordinary "Titans of Logging" Spring Photography Weekend, a celebration of historic steam locomotives and breathtaking Appalachian scenery. For the first time ever, all three types of geared locomotives—the Climax, Heisler, and Shay—will operate together along the Cass Scenic Railroad and Greenbrier River lines, providing a rare and spectacular opportunity for photographers and rail enthusiasts. Guests will have exclusive access to remote and scenic locations, with multiple runbys and planned photo opportunities, capturing the locomotives in action against the dramatic backdrop of mountains, rivers, and historic logging landscapes. The event offers an immersive experience that combines the power and charm of vintage railroading with the natural beauty of West Virginia’s highlands, making it a must-attend event for those passionate about photography, history, and trains.
The first day of the weekend features the ascent from Cass to Bald Knob atop Back Allegheny Mountain, the second-highest point in the state, where participants will witness the legendary three-locomotive race with the Climax, Heisler, and Shay working in unison. The trains climb historic grades, making scenic runby stops along the way, and the day concludes with a traditional night photography session under the stars. On the second day, the journey continues along the Cass to Durbin line, following the picturesque Greenbrier River. Here, the triple-header locomotives lead a consist of freight cars, a passenger car, and a caboose, stopping at farms and river locations to capture the beauty of the route. This unique event not only showcases the mechanical prowess of these rare locomotives but also offers an unforgettable opportunity to experience the historic logging railroads and scenic wonders of the region in a way that blends adventure, history, and photography into a single, memorable weekend.
