Guided Kayak Tour Explores Matlacha Pass Mangrove Wilderness

A guided eco-tour through the mangrove wilderness of the Matlacha Pass Aquatic Preserve is offering paddlers a closer look at one of Southwest Florida’s most ecologically rich waterways. The experience follows part of the Great Calusa Blueway Paddling Trail, known for its scenic and historic coastal routes.

The approximately two-hour journey takes participants through calm channels and winding mangrove corridors where wildlife is frequently observed. Manatees, dolphins, and a variety of wading birds are commonly spotted, adding a dynamic natural element to the immersive paddling experience.

Guides for the tour are ACA Certified Kayak and SUP Instructors as well as Florida Master Naturalists, providing both safety supervision and educational interpretation. Throughout the trip, they share insights into the region’s ecology, sustainability, and the diverse marine and bird life that inhabits the preserve.

The tour also highlights the cultural heritage of the region, including stories of the Calusa Indians who once navigated these waters. Tandem kayaks are provided, with single kayaks available upon request, and all excursions prioritize safety, comfort, and weather conditions, making the experience suitable for families and paddlers of all skill levels.
