One of the most spectacular views of your life!!! It's an experience I highly recommend. When you're up there, you just want time to stand still. It's worth sacrificing sleep to see the sunrise, although the descent is quite an experience too. The whole area around the volcano is paradise, a landscape straight out of a movie!

Amazing experience to sleep in the Caldeira and then do the hike. The way down through the lava ash with the view of your feet, the lava, the village, the caldeira, the ocean and the cloud is something you will never forget!

Stunning views, strenuous hike. Take a guide. If not, use open street maps, take most northern way up and second northern way down. Path 95% recognizable, in the dark even with a lamp, much less! To visit Pico Pequeno take southwestern route down. Do not attempt southwest route up!!!

This was an amazing adventure. My driver was wonderful, providing seamless hotel transfers. Throughout the journey, he shared fascinating history about Chã das Caldeiras and local wine, making the travel time highly informative. Our guide was absolutely amazing and very experienced. We were a small group (English and French speakers), and the guide expertly delivered all information in both languages, ensuring everyone was included. He shared a wealth of knowledge about the volcano, lava paths, and local life. Since we were a fit group, we chose the extra route for a supplement (with steel cables) to get better views. The best part was the final descent, where we ran down the volcano on the volcanic sand! Highly recommended!

Unforgettable hike to Pico do Fogo with Nezito! Climbing Pico do Fogo was an amazing experience, made even better by our guide, Nezito. He made the hike feel safe, smooth, and enjoyable from start to finish. We started early in the morning, which helped us avoid the heat — definitely a good idea. The view from the top is absolutely breathtaking: vast fields of lava and ash, incredible volcanic landscapes, and clear signs of past eruptions. It really gives you a sense of the raw power of nature. The descent? Like skiing down a slope of soft volcanic ash — so much fun! A good level of physical fitness is recommended, as the climb can be challenging at times — but absolutely worth it! Highly recommend this hike and Nezito as a guide if you're visiting Fogo!

It was a really nice hike. I definitely recommend bringing water and hiking boots. The walk down is super fun. Sliding down an ash field is very cool

Our guide, Junior, was excellent, he took the pace nice and steady, having regular short breaks and checking we we ok. He spoke excellent English and had a passion for the volcano and surrounding area, would highly recommend him.

It was an insane experience. The damage from last eruption is still noticeable. We went up in about 3 hours. Incredible view is all the time with you. On top it is very windy and smelly like sulfur. On the other site its perfectly to run the volcano down in the big field if ashes. Downwards you are in approx 30min.

Wonderful hike. Not difficult if you are in shape and used to climbing (summit can be reached in about 2h). Really great experience. Guide necessary especially to cross the peak and descend the other side. About 5.5h round trip with a break on top and a stop a pico pequeno on the way down. Totally worth it.

First things first: Even if you are an experienced mountaineer get a local guide!!! Not only are they a delight to have for extra information about the volcano and the life with it, the trail is hard to find and diverting from it can put groups that walk behind you at risk! We climbed up with Maurizio - and just meeting him was a highlight. You can always get in touch with the guides through Mustafa at Casa Marisa. Now, we are not hikers and we are only moderately fit, but we made it to the crater and back to Casa Marisa in 10hrs. You should be aware that the trail features some pretty scary parts (especially for people who are scared of heights). I only made it thanks to Maurizio. Also remember that the humidity of the air is very low - so pack enough water! If you do keep going you are rewarded with an experience you will never forget. The view (we had a perfectly clear day) was amazing, you can see the smoke coming from the crater and the hot air being emitted through some holes by the side. Going down make sure you take the path through the ash - it’s like a moon walk (careful: slippery at the bottom). You also have the best view of all the different lava fields and the other craters. On your way you can marvel at the wild plants and the fruit plantations. Even though going up was a highlight you should still visit Cha das Caldeiras of you don’t want to or cannot make it up the volcano. Just being in this place is pure magic!
