Experience the thrill of kayaking while prioritizing safety and preparedness for all participants. Every rider must wear a life jacket at all times and adhere to the kayak’s weight limits—450 lbs for tandem and 275 lbs for single—to ensure stability and proper handling. Participants need the ability to follow verbal or visual instructions, wear a properly fitted personal flotation device, and enter and exit the kayak safely, either independently or with assistance. At least one person in each kayak must be able to propel and navigate the vessel steadily, providing a safe and enjoyable experience on the water.
Discover the essential skills needed to handle unexpected situations such as a capsize. Participants should be able to tolerate 80-degree Fahrenheit water and bright sunlight for approximately 1.5 hours. They must know how to get out from under a watercraft independently, right themselves, and stay face up in the water with the aid of a personal flotation device. Learning and following these guidelines allows everyone to explore scenic waterways confidently while enjoying the outdoors in a safe and responsible manner.
