We came to visit during the Christmas holiday and were blown away by the landscape. The visitor centers were not opened when we came, so no comments on those. We spent a day here and barely scratched the surface of what this area has to offer (granted, some of it would take place more in the summer seasons). Wonderful place to hike and explore, observe wildlife, and spend the day. Not many visitors were around when we went, so it feels like at times that you have the place to yourself. Didn't see any of the highlighted mammals of the park but did get some decent birdwatching in. Just remember to bundle up if you come during the winter seasons.
By far the best experience we have had at a national park. Not crowded and utterly relaxing. We rented a house boat and stayed at a private island campsite each night. We did not get to see the aurora like we had hoped but the night sky was absolutely stunning. We are already planning our next trip.
Voyageurs was a unique and interesting park and I'm glad that we did, although I'm not sure I would need to come back. We did about 10 miles of paddling to the Cruiser Lake trailhead, where we then did about 30 miles of backpacking the next few days, staying at the Jorgens Lake and Peary Lake campsites. Both were nice and the bugs weren't terrible in the beginning of August as long as you were in your tent before dusk (then the mosquitoes got really bad). The trails were very overgrown on sections (make sure to check yourself for ticks) and we pretty much covered the entire trail system. The Anderson Bay Loop trail was probably the most scenic section. Hearing the song of the loons at night was a pleasant surprise. Also beware the tent pad dimensions are not accurately represented in the site descriptions (ended up being about 4 feet short in both directions), making for a more challenging pitch of both of our tents.
