I never appreciated how amazing Shelf Road is until I left Colorado. The fact that this place offers year-round, top quality climbing is unreal. As a shorter climber, I love climbing here because the rock offers so many intermediates. It’s like a mini Ten Sleep (not quite on the same level, but still a great spot). Fantastic spot.
Access is relatively good. It"s paved all the way to the turn off. Road to the Bank is much improved and easily handled by a basic rwd passenger car. Camping is well done... first come first serve. Credit cards now too! Well curated trail system. Easy access and basically kid friendly. Watch your bolt counts and take a clip stick for back up. Current guidebook leaves something to be desired.
Shelf Road came up as a route when we left Canon City headed to Cripple Creek. There was no warning about the type of road. It wasn’t until we were on the route, did we realize how dangerous of a road it was. It is unpaved up the side of a mountain with oncoming traffic at times. Thank goodness my husband handled it better than I did. There should be a warning before this road is chosen.
