We had the most wonderful time with Jean-Louis and Fiona in Jouques. A beautiful and inspiring village with breathtaking scenery to draw and paint in put us in the best possible creative mood. Jean-Louis and Fiona were incredibly welcoming and lovely hosts and made us feel part of the family. We loved the workshops and Jean-Louis is very passionate and educated. The painting course has a lot of variety and covers many aspects of painting, which was very exciting. Thank you for this unique learning experience!

Well structured drawing and painting sessions in four days. Jean-Louis is a fantastic teacher. It was a small group, so everyone has got the attention. En plein air drawing in every corner in Jouques, an authentic village in Provence, is a wonderful experience. I was incredibly impressed with how much I learned during the course of this master class. Art Retreat at Atelier Provence is the place to go for inspirational art full of depth and beauty.

This retreat was a truly enriching experience. Set in a peaceful Provençal village, it offered the perfect escape from daily life. Jean-Louis is not only a talented artist but also a generous and inspiring teacher. Each day began with a short theory session, followed by sketching in the village and nature. Based on these sketches, we created paintings using various techniques The atmosphere was warm, relaxed, and creative. Jean-Louis and his wife Fiona are gracious hosts who have created a magical, welcoming space they share with great openness. Thank you, Jean-Louis and Fiona, for this enriching, soul-nourishing experience. I returned home full of inspiration and gratitude – and I can’t wait to come back.

Right from the start, you‘ll be welcomed into the studio/home by Jean-Louis and his wife, Fiona. Jean-Louis (born French) was a fine arts teacher in Australia and his wife, Fiona, was a graphic designer. Jean-Louis is a very talented painter and his artwork graces the walls of his studio. Now in their retirement, they have started a business in Provence where he teaches art classes from his art studio/home. To begin, Jean-Louis went through best practice composition rules in the studio. We took a 5-10 minute walk down to the river, where we sat and picked a view to sketch (en plein air). Jean-Louis had us do some timed exercises so we didn’t overthink how to initially sketch our composition and then layered in detail over time. We spent about an hour sketching, picked up lunch at a local bakery, and went back to their studio. We took an hour break for lunch (they have an extra kitchen for guests to eat) and then regrouped in the studio to start our acrylic painting. We learned to mix a color scheme from using only 6 colors. We all agreed to paint in the impressionistic style, using Cezanne’s work as a reference. We worked on our paintings all afternoon with Jean-Louis’s guidance and help. It was so relaxing and rewarding and we love our final paintings. We will return home with beautiful keepsakes to remember the day and Provence. Jean-Louis explained everything before we started and was with us the entire time in case we had any questions. I was never a fan of acrylics, but he has given me a renewed interest in them. He wove art history and techniques into the lesson. He showed us how to mix the colors correctly to get the tints and shades we want, how to create a color chart for the current piece, and also experimenting with color combinations for future pieces. He explained why we should not use black, how to keep your brushes clean and proper care, why one does simple sketching outdoors and proper technique to set up a composition before beginning painting. I have taken many an art class and Jean-Louis taught me so much in one day. I have also not been one to work en plein air, but I now have newfound skills that I will take with me on future outdoor paintings. Even if you have taken art classes before, the area surrounding his studio is a beautiful area to translate to painting. We highly recommend you visit them and enjoy a day in Jouques, France.

A week in magical Jouques, a delightful town in Provence where you can shop in the village and prepare your food in your own apartment’s kitchen! With talented artist and teacher Jean-Louis, who shares his creative knowledge and experience with you in a program designed specifically for your artistic level and aspirations. I left with greater confidence in my artistic vision, capabilities and new skills for future paintings. I realized the dream of a lifetime to paint in the lavender fields of Provence. Thanks to Fiona and Jean-Louis for their kind hospitality (especially first aid for my broken ribs) and delightful conversation over afternoon tea
