Discover one of the most important zoological gardens and wildlife preservation centers in Mexico, nestled high on the scenic southern slopes of Tuxtla Gutiérrez. The Miguel Álvarez del Toro Zoo, known locally as ZooMAT, spans a vast protected natural park and offers a unique opportunity to experience the rich biodiversity of Chiapas. Visitors are guided along a winding walkway through a semi-deciduous forest that recreates the natural habitats of the region’s most representative species. Along the path, guests encounter an impressive variety of wildlife including wild boars, jaguars, harpy eagles, macaws, crocodiles, quetzals, deer, and the endangered guan, a bird endemic to Chiapas. The immersive environment allows visitors to feel as if they are stepping into the natural world of these remarkable animals, highlighting the importance of conservation and the preservation of the region’s ecological heritage. The park’s thoughtful design and dedication to wildlife education make it an essential destination for families, nature enthusiasts, and anyone interested in understanding the unique fauna of southern Mexico.
The adventure continues with a visit to the town of Copoya, where the iconic Christ of Copoya stands as a monumental symbol of faith and panoramic beauty. This striking steel and concrete structure rises above the city, offering breathtaking views and a serene atmosphere for reflection and exploration. Visitors can walk along the surrounding paths, which feature the traditional stations of the cross, while appreciating the expansive vistas of the city and surrounding landscapes. The combination of a deep connection to wildlife at ZooMAT and the cultural and spiritual significance of the Christ of Copoya provides a rich and memorable experience, blending education, adventure, and cultural appreciation into a single journey through the natural and human heritage of Chiapas.

My favorite zoo! (I’m a 73 year old veterinarian from the U.S., so I’ve been to plenty.) I was in Tuxtla Gutiérrez for a birding tour of Chiapas, with a day to spare. Loved the layout through the forest. It has good facilities with nice picnic areas. The choice of animals was great—only those of Chiapas (a point of pride), with plenty of species and exhibits. What I really liked was that most of the animals, including birds, were actually behaving, in part because most of the enclosures were fairly large and realistic. For instance, the peccary herd had a whole hillside. The tamandua and the tayra were really active and great to see. Not only that, but there was interesting free-ranging wildlife—Mexican Black Agoutis, Great Curassows, Crested Guan, Plain Chachalacas, Rufous-crowned Motmot, etc. (some of which we didn’t see elsewhere on the tour). Wow!!!

Quite a bit of construction going on so it is free to enter. For us the construction is a good thing. They are working hard to provide new and more spacious homes for our local inhabitants and we still had a wonderful day. The staff and the construction workers are amazing and helpful. Totally polite wnd very welcoming. The monkeys, birds, and small animals are free to roam and very entertaining. The monkeys are in the huge trees that for us were also a part of the entire atmosphere. We will be returning next year and will be excited to see the new areas, especially for the big cats. Our two grandkids (4 and 7) couldn't have had a better time. Not just a beautiful place but completely shaded with huge trees and paved trails with handrails to escape the heat! Thank you all for a great day!

Nice place even though some areas were closed for remodeling when I was there. There's many picnic tables and lots of shade.

Nice place to visit and spend some time learning and view the fauna and flora of the area. There are a few places to have a bite to eat, they allow for food to bring inside for doing picnic inside, just be respectful of the facilities and do not leave food behind, there is wild life roaming around.

I had a spectacular experience. This zoo focuses on local and indigenous species including the endanger jaguar and tapir. Black capybaras wander about freely. There are inspirational stones along the walking paths with thought provoking sayings. It was a very hot day, but with the extensive tree canopy it felt pleasant. Be prepared for walking. Regardless of which was you go, it is one big loop with up hill sections.
