Immerse yourself in the natural splendor of Montebello Lakes National Park, a sanctuary of crystalline waters and forested hills near the borderlands of Chiapas. The journey begins along a scenic forest trail leading to a graceful series of waterfalls, including the enchanting Bridal Veil waterfall, whose delicate cascade shimmers like flowing silk against moss covered rock. As the path unfolds, you will discover several breathtaking lagoons, each painted in shades of turquoise, emerald, and deep sapphire. Surrounded by pine and oak woodland, these tranquil waters reflect the sky and invite quiet contemplation. You may choose to glide across one of the lagoons in a traditional wooden boat guided by local boatmen, allowing you to fully appreciate the stillness and color of this extraordinary landscape. As evening approaches, arrival at Refugio Lodge offers a warm and rustic retreat nestled within a private reserve, where the aroma of freshly brewed regional coffee complements panoramic views from scenic overlooks.
The experience continues with peaceful walks through coffee plantations where the rich scent of ripening beans mingles with mountain air, revealing the agricultural traditions rooted in this fertile land. From a viewpoint above the forest canopy, witness a radiant sunset that bathes the lakes and hills in golden light. On the following day, you may savor breakfast at Laguna Azul Rest before continuing your exploration of the area. A visit to the remarkable El Perol cenote reveals a hidden gem of clear water embraced by limestone formations and lush vegetation, offering a serene setting to unwind and reconnect with nature. This immersive adventure blends gentle hiking, cultural discovery, and moments of relaxation within one of the most picturesque regions of southern Mexico, leaving you with lasting impressions of vibrant landscapes and authentic hospitality.

Amazing views. It was rainy but still mesmerizing. But if you’re thinking going by yourself for a day trip without a car, don’t… I went to Chiflon and Montebello taking Colectivos through Comitan and total trip costs 440 mxn. Tour companies offer the trip for 600. Waiting colectivos, navigating takes time. If you want to see them both, definitely go by tour.

I highly recommend arranging private transportation to visit the Montebello Lakes. The area is remote (about 55 km) with little to no internet, so offline maps are essential. We stayed one night in Comitán and split the trip into two days, which worked very well: Day 1: San Cristóbal → El Chiflón Waterfalls → Cenote Chukumaltik → Comitán Day 2: Comitán → Montebello Lakes only Trying to do everything in one day would be rushed. There are many lakes and viewpoints, so it’s best to visit at a relaxed pace. We focused on the main lakes: Pojoj Internacional Tziscao Cinco Lagos Plus one or two viewpoints, such as El Caracol and Agua Tinta. We skipped activities and lunch, stopping only for quick restroom breaks. Weather can be cool and change quickly, so bring warm layers, snacks, and water. Toilets and basic food are available at some lakes. Our entrance fees were included in a private transportation package arranged from San Cristóbal de las Casas, which made logistics much easier. A beautiful and peaceful place — plan well and don’t try to squeeze too much into one day.

Beautiful place to visit. We enjoyed visiting all the lakes and taking pictures. We did get a boat ride, as well. This location is ideal to take in scenery, feel connected to nature, and go slow. Perfect day trip.

🙅🏽♂️I wouldn't recommend this place at all! It's a big lake & some places at the lake are better than others. I'm specifically talking about the wooden boats location. You can't swim because there's a $1k peso fine!🤬 It's $250 peso per person to get on the boat, then & only then can you swim in the lake🤦🏽♂️. You also have to paddle yourself to the small island or anywhere else you go. It was 🥶cold, windy & 🌨️sprinkling when we went so we didn't go on the boat. I spoke to others that did go on the boat. They said they were up sold 🤑another location where it was a cenote they were taken to, they also said it wasn't worth the price & it wasn't a pretty site. IMO this boat location is a tourist trap bc all you can do is spend more money when you've already spent money to go there. You can't swim or do anything fun without spending more money🤷🏽♂️

One of the most beautiful attractions in southern Mexico. Administered by local Zapatista communities who are also coffee growers and strive to protect their natural surroundings. A must go if you’re in Chiapas.
