If you’re thinking about visiting Mount Vernon, don’t hesitate — it’s absolutely worth it. From the start, everything is extremely well organized. We had no wait time at all for the house tour, which made the experience relaxed and enjoyable. Every single area invites you to explore calmly, from the beautiful gardens to the walkways and exhibits. The bathrooms were very clean, and having a place to eat on-site is a huge plus, especially if you plan to spend several hours there. The entire place feels welcoming, educational, and comfortable. One of the best historical sites I’ve visited. Highly recommended.
What a beautiful property Mount Vernon is..we visited mid December and the house, which has been having lots of renovations, had just reopened 2 weeks before! It is a beautifully decorated house with vibrant colored rooms accented with gorgeous trim and accents throughout . The property is right on the Potomac with beautiful views. The museum was decorated with 5 or more beautiful trees for Christmas and there's a complimentary photo shoot for visitors to partake in. We loved the trivia facts we found out, like Aladdin the camel. He represents what G.W always had on the compound around Christmas time, to represent the Nativity. We were able to hike the whole compound, and walked to G.W and Martha's burial site . There's a beautiful museum with lots of interesting relics from the house and even A harpsichord!A lovely but somewhat hilly walk. We did it with no problems , taking our time. There's a nice restaurant if you have time and make a reservation, but they also have a little cafe sandwich pick up in the gift shop. The gift shoppe is very large and has lots of very nice local quality products. Nite, there's only outside seating if you grab a cafe sandwich . We were lucky enough to clear a spot as the slight snow was melting. The temp was about 45 -48 ⁰ but mild and doable if you're a bit hardy. I will definitely go back during the warmer weather .
The whole thing is essentially under construction and they still charge you full price to visit. I didn't even bother to take pictures because most of the house is blocked off or has tacky tarps and tools surrounding it. You couldn't even see the beautiful classic view of the water from the back porch because they had ugly 'brick' tarps covering everything. I got pictures of some of tarps to show. The tour is bland and very basic. I was expecting to learn more than the simplistic facts that you could have figured out by just looking at the rooms. I understand that it's probably boring for the staff to have to repeat the same 6 facts over and over again, but it feels like I got swindled because I truly didn't learn anything of substance. The staff varied on politeness but everyone was so picky about carrying beverages and snacks.. The very same concessions that this place SOLD. They also didn't let you re-enter from the gift shop area to enter the premises. This was extremely irritating because if you needed to buy a sandwich or coffee, you were forced to go to the exit and re-enter the main entrance/go through security. Finally, the slave memorial was absolutely pathetic and completely inappropriate. The plaques and informational material focused on the 'ladies organization ' who bought Mount Vernon. The information was written to emphasize how great this group was and how they ensured that the slaves would be remembered for their service. The whole memorial left me with a nasty taste with the organization only making it so that they could pat themselves on the back and marvel at the 'wonderful work' they did. The only positive was seeing the camel.
