A beautiful park to wander through and three kilometers of hiking to relax your mind. Visited in winter with the goal of visiting the frozen waterfalls, the trail is very easy, even for the less experienced. The visit it offers speaks for itself!
Korouoma Canyon – January 2025 Group: Family of 4, children ages 5 & 7 🌄 Experience Summary Seeing a frozen waterfall was on our family’s bucket list, so our trip to Lapland wouldn’t have felt complete without visiting Korouoma Canyon — one of Finland’s most dramatic canyon landscapes. In winter, several streams that normally cascade into waterfalls freeze into spectacular ice formations clinging to the canyon walls, creating a winter wonderland that’s both beautiful and surprisingly family-friendly. As we had other plans the same day and daylight is limited in January, we chose to visit only the largest frozen waterfall on the trail — Ruskea Virta (the Brown River) — and were captivated by the sight of water frozen in time against stark cliffs. In winter, many hikers tackle full loop trail, which leads past three of the canyon’s main icefalls, including Ruskea Virta, offering excellent views and photo opportunities throughout. ⭐ Highlights • Deep canyon scenery with a massive icefall suspended on the cliff face — Ruskea Virta is truly impressive. • Watching ice climbers on the frozen waterfall added an extra layer of excitement. 📝 Tips for Visitors (Families with kids) • The hike to the biggest frozen waterfall is relatively easy, despite some elevation changes. In winter the trail is mostly covered in packed snow, so it’s not especially slippery. We needed about 3 hours round trip with kids, including breaks and stops. • If you want to take the longer route and see all three icefalls (with the biggest one at the end and fire pits), after passing the café in the wooden cabin and reaching the fork, go left following the trail sign. Otherwise, go straight/right following the sign for the frozen waterfall to take the shorter route to Ruskea Virta. Expect the longer route to be a bit more slippery — spikes can be useful. Plan it towards a full-day activity with kids if you want to take it slow, as daylight is short in winter. Don’t forget a flashlight. • Bring your own wood and lighter if you plan to use the fire pits, although sometimes leftover wood from organized groups may be available. • Parking is available at the main trailhead, with information boards and basic trail markers. • Bring warm layers, gloves, and hot drinks or snacks — winter temperatures can be extreme, especially with small children. ⚠️ Observations & Safety • Trails can be icy and uneven; children should be supervised. • Although tempting, getting too close to the icefall can be dangerous due to the risk of falling ice.
Korouoma Canyon – Peaceful Winter Hike We visited Korouoma Canyon on a day trip from Rovaniemi (just over an hour’s drive by rental car) and absolutely loved it. The hike we did was about 5 km long and easy to follow on our own, thanks to the clear maps and trail signs—no guide needed. There’s a large, free parking area at the trailhead, and no entrance fee to access the canyon. The trail is quite accessible; you don’t need special hiking shoes, but warm clothing is essential in the colder months. The scenery was beautiful and peaceful, with snow-covered trees and frozen waterfalls along the way. A great option if you're looking for a self-guided winter adventure close to Rovaniemi!
