Vyšehrad (German: Wyschehrad, Prager Hochburg, English: "upper castle") is a historic fort in Prague, Czech Republic, just over 3 km southeast of Prague Castle, on the east bank of the Vltava River.[1] It was likely constructed in the 10th century. Inside the fort are the Basilica of St. Peter and St. Paul and the Vyšehrad Cemetery, containing the remains of many famous Czechs, such as Antonín Dvořák, Bedřich Smetana, Karel Čapek, and Alphonse Mucha. It also contains Prague's oldest Rotunda of St. Martin, from the 11th century.
Vyšehrad is a beautiful and underrated gem in Prague, situated a little away from the busy city centre, yet absolutely worth the visit. Perched atop a hill overlooking the Vltava River, this historic fort offers a refreshing contrast to the crowds of Old Town and Prague Castle. The area is rich in history and features excellent architecture, most notably the Basilica of St. Peter and St. Paul, along with ancient fortifications and the historic cemetery where many notable Czech figures are buried. The grounds are spacious and well maintained, making it ideal for a relaxed walk. What truly stands out are the magnificent panoramic views of the Vltava River and the city below. Visiting in the later half of the day is highly recommended, as the golden-hour light and sunset views add a magical touch to the experience. Combined with its calm, serene atmosphere, Vyšehrad is the perfect place to slow down and enjoy a quieter, more reflective side of Prague.
This is a large and extensive, clean, quiet and restful area, overlooking the city, where it is very pleasant to spend some time. Enjoy the structures and the natural havens, have a beer, eat something. From there, you can take the Metro from the nearby station, and go into the city. Or, you can walk a bit, downhill - via the alley and then large stairs, surrounded by trees - , get to the boulevard below, and take the tramway to go into the heart of the city, or up its hills towards other must-see, must-visit, wonderful and charming areas.
