Excellent hike. Strenuous but well worth it. Guides were great. Very organized and on top of things. Would absolutely recommend.
This was a physical challenge! Lots of scrambling up rocks and roots. Beautiful view at the top. Good guides who supported the various fitness levels and personalities of the group.
You need to be reasonably fit for this hike, as it includes a 2,500-foot elevation gain and is particularly tough on the ankles and knees. The first mile is a fairly standard hike, but the final 1.25–1.5 miles involve bouldering and scrambling, which significantly increases the difficulty. In some sections, the descent is just as challenging as the climb, so hiking poles, lots of water, and sturdy footwear are highly recommended. The trail is very well marked and can easily be done unguided, as we did. Depending on when you go, you’ll likely encounter other tour groups—you can either pace alongside them or move ahead if you prefer. If you go unguided, you’ll likely have a “friend” with you for a good portion of the hike—whether you invite them or not. We had one dog tag along with us for the first half of the trail, and we even heard they’ll sometimes go all the way to the summit. There are several farm dogs that live near the house by the trailhead, often referred to as the volcano’s “security guards.” According to the guides, only the male tends to accompany hikers, and it sounds like the role is almost passed down from one dog to the next. We’re dog people, so we found it pretty cute and a nice addition.
