Experience the dramatic beauty of Reynisfjara Black Beach

Explore the Majestic Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon and Iconic South Coast Waterfalls on This Journey

Discover the breathtaking Jökulsárlón and Fjallárslón glacier lagoons, situated at the southern edge of the massive Vatnajökull glacier in Iceland. These stunning sites are located between the Skaftafell preservation area and the town of Höfn, directly adjacent to the famous Icelandic Ring Road. The lagoons are filled with massive icebergs that calve off the Breidamerkurjokull Glacier, creating a serene and icy landscape that eventually drifts out toward the vast Atlantic Ocean.

Travelers have the unique opportunity to experience the lagoon up close through optional amphibian boat tours or more adventurous zodiac boat excursions. These water-based activities allow visitors to navigate between the floating ice formations, providing an intimate look at the remnants of Europe’s largest glacier. It is highly recommended to secure your spot in advance to ensure availability, as these popular tours often fill up quickly during the peak travel seasons.

The journey continues with stops at some of Iceland’s most iconic natural landmarks along the South Coast. You will visit the spectacular Seljalandsfoss waterfall, where a path allows you to walk directly behind the cascading water for a unique perspective. Additionally, the tour includes a stop at the powerful Skógafoss waterfall and the dramatic Reynisfjara Black Beach, known for its striking volcanic sands and the powerful waves of the Atlantic Ocean crashing against the shore.

This comprehensive tour offers a perfect blend of geological wonder and scenic beauty, showcasing the diverse landscapes that define Iceland. By combining the icy serenity of the glacier lagoons with the raw power of the southern waterfalls and coastal beaches, this experience provides a deep connection to the island's natural environment. It is an essential itinerary for those looking to witness the most famous sights of the South Coast in a single, memorable day trip.

This was one of my top 10 places to visit in Iceland. I absolutely loved it. The ice rocks were magical. Truly amazing experience.

Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon is breathtaking in every season and every hour of the day. Because our kids were too young for the zodiac, we opted for the amphibian boat, which ended up being a great way for the whole family to experience the lagoon. Drifting among the massive icebergs and seeing the glacier up close was awe-inspiring. We even spotted seals, and the crew handed us a piece of ancient glacier ice to hold; a simple but memorable moment that kept the kids entertained. Beyond the boat tour, it’s worth spending time walking along the nearby black sand beach, where chunks of brilliant blue ice wash ashore. In the sunlight they glisten like scattered diamonds against the dark volcanic sand; truly one of Iceland’s most iconic sights. We found ourselves returning more than once because the lagoon constantly transforms with the light, tides, and weather, making each visit feel new. The area is easy to access with a large paid parking lot, restrooms, and a small shop selling food and drinks. A truly unforgettable stop in Iceland.

Well worth the 5+ hour drive from the airport. Amazing up-close views of glaciers and seals. Experienced tour guides take you out and explain everything. Felt very safe and the views are indescribable. You even get to hold a piece of glacier in the boat. Well worth the money! I didn’t want the tour to end.
