Experience the historic and scenic journey of the Ancient Salt Road on a full-suspension e-MTB, starting from the Casa del Romano refuge near Fascia. You’ll ride through the Antola Natural Park, ascend to the summit of Monte Antola, and traverse the legendary “Cammino Petronico,” an ancient mule track once used for transporting salt. Along the way, you’ll pass through picturesque villages in the Trebbia Valley, admire terraced vineyards and olive groves, and enjoy panoramic views of the Ligurian Sea, immersing yourself in both the natural beauty and cultural heritage of the region.

Discover the unique blend of sport and history as you navigate challenging trails with 1,000 meters of elevation gain over 50 km of single track. Learn to refine your e-MTB skills while exploring UNESCO-listed landscapes and the traditional dry-stone walls that characterize Liguria’s terraced hillsides. Explore the route from the mountains to the sea, ending in the charming neighborhood of Nervi by the harbor, combining adventure, stunning scenery, and a rich historical narrative into one unforgettable day.

I am the owner of the B&B Rifugio Uscio and I believed in this path in 2007 and I was together with very few others (Hotel Posta and B&B Villa Tiffany) to believe in this path which is called Via del Sale (Lombardy) - The Via del Mare (2 stages in Liguria) starts from Varzi and arrives at the Portofino Park (VM signpost), and now we have many variants right from Uscio last stage you can arrive in Rapallo (we have 2 variants for Rapallo, then Recco, the classic VM goes to Camogli) and Sori and obviously Portofino where the path ends or San Fruttuoso, so the nice thing is the 6 possibilities of arrival (in order Camogli, Recco, Portofino, San Fruttuoso, Rapallo and Sori) and it is obviously feasible in 4 stages because each stage is 24 km, only the last stage is 18 km and you arrive in Portofino, only 12 km for Ruta di Camogli, 1 Stage Varzi - 2nd stage Capannette di Pey or Capanne di Cosola - 3rd stage Torriglia - 4th and last Uscio - Portofino Park which is in the Golfo Paradiso, just 9 km from Recco and 10 km from Camogli above the Portofino park and you arrive at Ruta di Camogli. Thanks to De Billio Gianbattista who has inserted many VM trail signs in Liguria, so that the walk can be done in complete safety. Thanks Gian Battista FIE official. Those who are really making the difference are the FRIENDS of Golfo Paradiso who clean the 4th stage from Monte Bado, Uscio Outdoor, willing pensioners and not only from Uscio who clean the part around Uscio, the CAI of Rapallo for the Rapallo variant, an absolute zero the municipality of Uscio, and the 2 parks one regional (ANTOLA) and the second (PORTOFINO NATIONAL PARK) have a director Dr Marenco who should do much, much more because it was only Dr Girani former director of the Portofino park in 2017 who made a real turning point right from Uscio to Ruta di Camogli considering the Uscio territory as if it were already a PARK. Thanks Dr Girani

Beautiful, yet very challenging, three-day route from Varzi to Uscio, just a stone's throw from the sea. The fourth stage, which leads to the coast, offers several alternatives and can be completed in Sori, Recco (as we did), Camogli, San Fruttuoso, or Portofino. Varzi, around Monte Chiappo, and Uscio are well-marked and offer adequate services, while Torriglia doesn't offer many viable options. The Albergo della Posta, where we stayed, is an old, worn-out hotel, and there are two B&Bs, both outside of town (though one offers transportation to and from the Via del Sale). We did it in the first half of July, and on the third stage, vegetation had heavily overgrown the trail in many sections, and we had to navigate our way through brambles (our arms and legs bear witness). In particular, the section before the Casa Bea B&B in Bargagli presented several problems. Immediately afterward, I believe thanks to the B&B staff, and all the way to the next village, everything was perfect.
