Meeks owned the house
Two major wing additions expanded the house during Meeks’ ownership
Rear wing added master bedroom
Name White Wings derived from the prominent wing expansions of home
White Wings was built between 1833 and 1835 as the residence of Sarah Robinson and originally designed as a simple late Federal-style cottage with a modest portico. Following her death in 1853, the property was acquired by Charles Meeks, a native of New York who was a banker and involved in the grocery business in Natchez. Meeks owned the house for nearly five decades, from 1854 until his death in 1902, during which time he undertook significant expansions that transformed the original structure into a more substantial and elegant home.
Between 1864 and 1886, Meeks added a rear wing that included a master bedroom, enhancing the functionality and scale of the house. Later, between 1892 and 1894, another bedroom featuring a bay window was added, further enlarging the home. These two major wing additions gave rise to the house’s name, White Wings, and reflect the evolving architectural tastes and needs of its long-term owner. The combination of Federal-style origins and later Victorian-era enhancements makes White Wings an important example of historical residential architecture in Natchez.
