Aavasaksa is a historically significant hill known for its unique elevation above the surrounding landscape, which made it an important site for early scientific exploration. It was first used by Pierre Louis Maupertuis during the French Geodesic Mission of 1736–1737 and later became a key point in the Struve Geodetic Arc. Because of its role in helping determine the size and shape of the Earth, UNESCO recognized Aavasaksa as a World Heritage Site along with 33 other locations across Europe. The hill is also famous for being one of the southernmost places in Finland where the midnight sun can be clearly seen during summer.

Surrounded by striking natural scenery, Aavasaksa sits between the Torne River to the west and the smaller Tengeliö River to the east and north, offering panoramic river views and peaceful surroundings. Nearby lies Övertorneå, also known as Ylitornio, a small locality and municipal center in Norrbotten County, Sweden. With roots dating back to the 16th century, the area reflects rich regional history, including an old church and beautifully preserved landscapes. Together, Aavasaksa and Övertorneå offer a blend of scientific heritage, natural beauty, and cultural history.
