Cape Sounion is much more than the Temple of Poseidon. There is a temple to Athena there. The Athenians built a fortress there during the Peloponnesian War in 413 BC. This included a small harbor for their triremes. The purpose of this fortress was to guard the approaches by sea to Athens. Very impressive fortifications! Please do not focus only on the point.
The Poseidon temple is really an impressive site. The views of the sea are spectacular. Archaeological site in general is really well kept and well worth the drive down from Athens. I can highly recommend bringing something cozy if you want to watch the sundown in autumn.
