Located in South Iceland, stretching from the black sand beaches of Vík to the glacier-covered volcanoes inland, this UNESCO-recognized geopark offers a unique mix of dramatic geology, rich folklore, and otherworldly scenery. The landscapes here are absolutely stunning—ranging from moss-covered lava fields and black deserts to icy glaciers and thundering waterfalls.
Sept.24 We camped at Thakgil campground and on our way back to main ringroad towards Vik, we visited Katla Geopark. Beautiful views of the surrounding mountains, rivers and glaciers with astonishing colors. Very peaceful and quiet.
Stunning. Helps to have 4x4 up here if the rain sets in. Astonishingly beautiful. I don’t like tree, so this scenery really appeals to my sensitivities. If you like trees, you may be in the wrong place.
