Hike in the rainforest. Very easy hike, amazing forest and beautiful small waterfalls. The total walking distance was about 8.5 kilometres, we took a great local guide (Paddle Sr Lanka), very recommended. Wear long pants, there are leeches. Overall a must experience in this area.

We reached the Makandawa Forest Reserve by taking a ferry across the Kelani River, followed by a short walk to the forest entrance. Our hike led us to a quiet spot called “Athawatuna Wala.” The area is peaceful and ideal for hiking enthusiasts seeking a calm, nature-filled escape. When we visited, there were only 2–3 other visitors in the area, and a single person managed the ticket counter at the entrance, so plan your visit carefully and ensure your safety. Watch out for slippery paths, especially during rainy weather. Leeches are a common challenge in the area and can slow you down. The overall experience was unique and mildly adventurous, offering a refreshing connection with nature. Please help protect this beautiful reserve by avoiding littering and leaving the environment as pristine as you found it.❤️❤️

I visited this rainforest, and it was an absolutely amazing experience! The journey began with a boat ride across the river, which costs Rs.100 for locals and Rs.500 for foreign visitors. The entrance fee is Rs.75 for locals and Rs.930 for foreigners. The best time to visit is in the morning when you can spot a variety of birds and animals in their natural habitat. The breathtaking views of the lush greenery, natural water pools, and vibrant wildlife make this place a paradise for nature lovers.Just ensure to plan your visit early in the day to make the most of it. Beware the Leaches and Snakes!

This is one of the most accessible lowland tropical rainforests in Sri Lanka, located just a two-and-a-half-hour direct drive from Colombo. Tickets can be obtained at the entrance, and the forest features clear walking paths. However, be prepared for leeches, even if it hasn’t rained. It's highly recommended to wear leech socks, long trousers, and long sleeves as you’ll encounter mosquitoes and other insects typical of rainforests. Since it’s a rainforest, it’s best to carry a raincoat. The forest is home to beautiful freshwater streams filled with endemic fish. This area is a perfect example of Sri Lanka's Lowland Tropical Rainforests, with trees mostly endemic to the island. The forest has an impressive five-layer tree canopy. For birdwatchers, this forest is an excellent destination. You can spot endemic species such as the Red-faced Malkoha, Green-billed Coucal, Sri Lanka Scimitar Babbler, Orange-billed Babbler, and Sri Lanka Drongo. Non-endemic species like the Malabar Trogon, Black-backed Dwarf Kingfisher, Legge’s Hawk Eagle, and Velvet-fronted Nuthatch can also be seen. If you are lucky, you will have a chance to see Rough-horned Lizards and Hump-nosed Lizards, both are endemic to Sri Lanka. There are three beautiful waterfalls to explore at the end of each trail. This forest is a must-visit for nature lovers and bird enthusiasts alike!

Can't wait to go back! 🌿🌳⛰️
