This is well worth a trip. There is not a lot to see (the castle is now a hotel and you can’t go in) but I was glad we stayed the night nearby because we went at night and during the day. The lights, especially at Christmas, were spectacular. In the morning we explored the walls (you can walk mostly all the way around…use care because there were no hand rails). Lots of restaurants and shops to poke through, and live musicians in the murder hole. Wonderful medieval town.

Óbidos Christmas Village (Vila Natal) is an absolutely magical experience that truly brings the holiday spirit to life. The village is beautifully decorated, with charming lights, festive displays, and an enchanting atmosphere that delights visitors of all ages. There are plenty of activities, stalls, and seasonal treats to enjoy, making it a perfect destination for families, couples, or groups of friends looking to celebrate the season. The only drawback is that the queues can be quite long for many attractions and stands, especially during peak times, but the overall joy and festive charm make it well worth the visit.

Castelo de Óbidos is a beautiful and historic place to visit. The castle is very well preserved and offers stunning views over the town and surrounding countryside. Walking along the walls feels like stepping back in time. The atmosphere is charming, with cobbled streets, traditional houses, and plenty of photo opportunities. Óbidos itself is lovely to explore, with small shops, cafés, and local treats like ginjinha. A must-visit destination for history lovers and anyone looking to experience the charm of Portugal.

Such a cute city! The Christmas market was in full swing and climbing the castle walls and viewing the surrounding countryside was a highlight. The shops were very tourist oriented but still fun to see the regional goods. Look closely at that dark doorway as it is a fun little pub run but the same family for the past 70 years!

One of the highlights of our visit to Portugal. For the sure footed, you can walk the city wall which has no railing. ⚠️ Extremely dangerous for children with a 30 foot fall. The views from the wall near sunset are gorgeous. Climbing through the hole at the west end of the wall yields a breathtaking view. Parking is horrific. Maybe 20 spots and no room to turn around at a dead end with all of the construction equipment. Thank God for backup cameras. Park at the bottom of castle wall and walk up into town instead (the opposite side that Google Maps takes you to.) There is a cute street with little shops, restaurants and cafés to grab a souvenir, dinner, or dessert. The cherry liquor in the chocolate shot glass (or thimble really 😅) was worth the €1.50 to try. There's a beautifully decorated shop with little codfish cakes. It's a bit pricy to add wine with a glass you can keep for €25 and a bite of cheese and jam for €5. Overall, great place to visit, not great for strollers or small children.
