After breakfast, we will depart from the hotel and head toward Angkor Thom, the ancient walled city that was once the capital of the Khmer Empire. Our first stop will be the South Gate of Angkor Thom, an impressive entrance flanked by statues of gods and demons. As we enter the city, we will make our way to the famous Bayon Temple, built in the 13th century by King Jayavarman VII. Bayon is renowned for its intricate galleries of bas-reliefs that depict scenes from daily life during the Khmer Empire. The temple is also famous for its striking towers adorned with over 200 serene, smiling faces, which look down from every angle, offering a sense of peace and mystery.
Next, the tour continues as we visit the Baphuon Temple, a massive structure built as a Hindu temple dedicated to the god Shiva. We will also explore the Elephant Terrace, once a royal viewing platform, and the Terrace of the Leper King, named after a sculpture resembling a leper king. The Royal Palace, once a magnificent site, is another key stop on our journey through Angkor Thom. To wrap up the morning, we will head to Ta Prohm Temple, one of the most iconic temples in the Angkor complex. Famous for its appearance in the Tomb Raider movie, Ta Prohm is known for its unique fusion of nature and architecture, with large tree roots enveloping the stone structures. Originally built as a Buddhist monastery and university in the 12th and 13th centuries, Ta Prohm offers a fascinating glimpse into the passage of time and the interplay between nature and human creations.
