Begin your 2-day trip from Athens to Delphi and Meteora with an early morning pickup from most central Athens hotels. Travel by air-conditioned minibus along the national highway into central Greece, passing through Thebes, Levadia, and making a brief stop in Arachova. Around midday, arrive at Delphi, one of the most important sites of ancient Greece, situated on the slopes of Mount Parnassus between the Fedriades hills. Dedicated to Apollo, the god of music and sunlight, Delphi was considered the center of the ancient world and home to the famous Oracle of Delphi, who advised kings and pilgrims from across Greece. Explore the Sacred Way leading to the Temple of Apollo, visit the ancient theater with a 5,000-spectator capacity, and see the stadium where the Pythian Games were held, predecessors to the modern Olympics.
On the second day, enjoy breakfast before exploring the dramatic landscape of Meteora, famous for its towering sandstone summits formed under the sea millions of years ago. Visit two of the monasteries perched atop the cliffs, such as Megalo Meteoro, the first abbey established by Athanasius, and St. Stephen’s Monastery, which still houses monks and nuns. These monasteries offer a striking combination of natural beauty and spiritual heritage. On the return journey to Athens, make a brief stop at Thermopylae to see the statue of Spartan King Leonidas I, honoring the legendary battle against the Persians in 480 B.C.
