This highland adventure begins at Hrauneyjar Highland Center in Iceland’s remote Southern Highlands, where expert guides lead you east along Sigölduvegur Gamli, skirting the vast lava field of Sölvahraun between Sauðafell and Valafell, before passing Skjólkvíarhraun and catching sight of the powerful Hekla volcano—one of Iceland’s most active and historically feared peaks, once called the “Gateway to Hell”; the journey continues through Svalaskarð across Helliskvísl and the rugged Pokahryggir into the steaming geothermal valleys of Reykjadalir, where black obsidian, moss-covered earth, and rising vapor create an otherworldly scene, leading to Hrafntinnusker, a striking rhyolite mountain known for its hot springs and occasional glacier caves and a notable stop on the Laugavegur hiking trail, after which the route descends toward Dalamót past Hrafntinnuhraun lava field and the hidden Rúdolf waterfall, continuing by Laufafell and Rangárbotnar toward Langvíuhraun and north to Mosfell via Breiðaskarð with Innri Vatnafjöll towering nearby, pausing for lunch amid dramatic lava landscapes near Nýjahraun west of Krakatindur, and finally passing the distinctive formations of Hestalda and Rauðaskál before descending along sandy tracks past Áfangagil on Dyngjuleið and returning to Hrauneyjar Highland Center, completing an immersive journey through Iceland’s volcanic wilderness.
