We spent two days and nights at 'Pleven Hut' in November 2025, luckily at a quite some sunny Sunday. The views and surroundings were amazing, even with first snow on the mountain tops. Especially the long southern balcony of its gastronomy was sunny and totally relaxing. The big guest room of the bistro resembles an average Bulgarian tavern with bar, a guests' regulars' table and a large flat screen TV. Prices are astonishingly reasonable for such a remote location and the Mushroom-Soup was as delicious as the Chicken-Soup, ... besides that they serve traditional Bulgarian dishes that you can look up in the menu from the photos. In the basement they have a large library for chilling and even a piano to play on. The rooms were from two-bed rooms to larger spaces with 4 bunk beds (8 persons) and they provide clean sheets and warmer blankets. Heating might be a bit of a problem, but you can as for heaters ... and as far as the beds might be diffent and not all with really comfortable mattresses, the wallpapers are peeling off in many rooms and some people have also reported mold. The sanitary unity in spite of this are freshly renovated and quite clean as far as seen by us. So all in all quite a good recommendation for discovering the Central Balkan Mountains - just go for it.
My daughter & I had a fantastic hike with Ivo in the Central Balkan National Park mountain range. Ivo is extremely knowledgable regarding nature & history of the mountains. The scenery & conversations made for an enjoyable day out, it was like hiking with a friend.
We were offered another tour to the Rila Lakes with Ivo ( Ivailo ) and we took it! And he was an amazing tour guide despite the lifts not working, he still offered us a bunch of other things that we can do including going to the top of the Rila Lakes. He told us the wonderful mythology of the lakes and was very understanding the whole way through and helped us climb the mountains. Very grateful we had him as a tour guide and definitely made our journey memorable to an extent.
