The Museo Nacional de Antropología is incredibly interesting and easily one of those places where you can spend an entire day without getting bored. The exhibitions are extensive and well maintained, and the overall conditions of the museum are very good, both in terms of space and presentation. There are no official audio guides, but I actually turned that into a plus by making my own with ChatGPT, which worked surprisingly well and let me go at my own pace. The Maya section stood out the most for me, especially the dedicated building, which is rich, dense, and genuinely impressive. Another big advantage is the atmosphere. It was busy but not overcrowded, and there were not too many annoying tourists, so it was easy to focus and really engage with the material. If you are even remotely interested in history or culture, this museum is a must and absolutely worth a long, unhurried visit.
Truly, the biggest gem Mexico City has. The hype is real, people!! It's a behemoth so plan on a whole day or 2 days. Each piece holds so much ancient history of the people of the meso-Americas. A well organized museum but you'll have to ask dossiers as i could not find a map. Every staff member i spoke was pleasant and helpful. If you can get your tickets ahead of time, I would as there were lines. Their restaurant is superb and a nice break from the craziness of the first floor. Don't forget to explore the garden areas outside each hall. It was the best experience I have had in a museum in such a long time. My only issue is that only some plaques are translated into English and lots of artifacts have no explanations at all
This is not just a museum, it's a true educational experience that will fundamentally change the way you understand Mexico, especially if you know little about its complex, ancient past. The museum is beautifully structured, starting with a primer on general anthropology and ethnographic studies and then precedes in a chronological fashion to detail the ancient civilizations that settled Mexico, going into rich detail about society, culture, everyday life, religion, history, diet, living arrangements, etc... I HIGHLY recommend the restaurant as well, very good food with an upscale tranquil atmosphere!
