The tour of the Palmenti di Pietranico offers a fascinating journey through the ancient wine-making heritage of Abruzzo. This circuit was created to showcase the remarkable basins and outcropping rocks scattered throughout the territory, which were ingeniously carved by local artisans to vinify grapes directly in the fields. By processing the grapes on site, farmers only transported the must back to their homes, leaving the waste behind to naturally fertilize the land. These millstones are exceptional examples of craftsmanship, reflecting both the skill of local artisans and the significance of fine wine production in the region. Pietranico boasts the highest concentration of these stone basins in Abruzzo, set on the west-facing slope beneath the town, providing an extraordinary window into the area’s agricultural and cultural history. Visitors gain a unique perspective on traditional wine-making techniques and the integration of agriculture with the natural landscape.
The itinerary begins in the village along via Umberto I, where the Caprera Bath has been preserved and restored to its original glory. From here, the route continues downhill along asphalt roads and natural tracks, leading to other notable baths such as the Mattucci, Villa Odoardi, De Vito, Grandonio, and Marzio Baths, each carved from stone and holding centuries of history. The path combines gentle hikes, scenic tracks bordered by oak trees, and glimpses of natural stone basins, offering both educational and visually striking experiences. Along the way, visitors enjoy the charm of the countryside, the ingenuity of ancient artisans, and the continuity of a wine-making tradition that has shaped the region. The tour concludes with a tasting of local wines and typical products, allowing participants to savor the flavors of the land while reflecting on the heritage and remarkable craftsmanship witnessed throughout the journey.

Really worth a stop. You can visit those little houses called Palmenti, where peasants used to press the grapes with feet to produce wine. It’s very interesting piece of history.
Antonis

Houses like hobits!Must visit and see them. Very beautiful!!!

The best part of this visit is the mural that shows how the grape was pressed with bare feet. Nothing else is explained, except some italian discussing the geological qualities of the stone in ancient times. It's a pity, because if there was an open souvenir shop on site, they could sell magnets, local traditional wines, or else, but nothing is organized, the entrance is totally free and nobody cares. Dilapidated archeological site.

I liked the place - it is small but interesting. All houses are with doors open and you can see what`s inside. If you have a drone, you can make a more impressive photo. No entrance fee. No parking nearby, we parked at the road but didn`t leave the car for too long.

It is an interesting landscape with unique old wine structures that remind you of Hobbiton 😂 bear in mind that it’s just a place worth stopping for a picture if you are passing by. Unfortunately, some of the houses are used as a dumpster 😩
